Irisitis - Planned Holiday Including Flight?

Today's question is Hi all, My husband's left eye became severely painful and inflammed a week ago. He was prescribed various eye creams and drops which he has been taking religiously. His vision in that eye remains very blurred. The doctor ordered blood tests and x-rays and we get the results of those tomorrow. So far the eye specialist has been unable to see the back of his eye (because of the inflamation?) I am really worried about whether he will regain the vision in his eye. Does anyone have experience of this condition? We are also due to go on holiday in 10 days time (for 2 weeks) - which includes a long flight. Yesterday the eye specialist said it is too early to know whether we should go. Does anyone have any experience of travelling / holidays with irisitis / eye inflammation? What are the chances we will be able to travel? Thanks for any advice / experiences you are able to share.

In this case my opinion is I think you mean Iritis which is the milder form of Uveitis. If your ophthalmologist can get the disease under control prior to your leaving for vacation, you should be able to leave. However, treatment is often long term and until it is determined how severe the Iritis is, I doubt anyone can tell you whether or not you should travel. The problem with Iritis/Uveitis is that is it very difficult to determine the trigger that caused the disease which is generally a systemic disease, including but not limited to, lime disease, rheumatoid arthritis and psoriasis, ergo the blood tests. The underlying cause of the disease should also be treated if it can be found. In my seventeen years of working in an eye hospital which did have a Uveitis Specialty, I only know of a few cases in which the patient lost vision. Early diagnosis and treatment is extremely important in treating this disease. Your husband should be under the care of an ophthalmologist who is also a Uveitis Specialist or at the very least an Ophthalmologist. If you have an Eye or ENT hospital in your area, you should be able to get a referral to a Uveitis Specialist. Your husband should have given his doctor a complete history, including any dental work he recently had done, especially if he had any eye problems prior to having dental work done. I know this sounds strange, but we did have a patient who had minor laser surgery, then dental work which caused bacteria to get into the back of the eye, causing the Uveitis. Unfortunately due to a delay in getting a proper diagnosis and not going to the right specialist in time, this patient's outcome was not good. I am not trying to scare you, but it is most important to give your eye specialist any little detail that might help determine the initial cause of the Iritis. I hope that your husband's Iritis can be treated and gotten under control so that you can enjoy your vacation.
