Should I forge a signature?
I've got this question I just got my midterm progress reports today and my mom is sure to freak. I have an 89% average in math, and even though I am 13, 7th grade, she has always wanted me to get all A's. The only time I've ever gotten a B otherwise was in math in 5th grade when I just moved to a new place. Since this is only midterms, I KNOW I can bring it up (we've only had 2/4 tests). However, if my mom even sees an A- or if I don't get anything but a 100 or miss any points, she screams at me. Yes, you guessed it, (not being stereotypical) an ASIAN MOM! Well I have the progress report beside me, haven't shown her yet. The thing is that she's supposed to sign it. Would it be worth it to forge it? Her signature is very easy and I could easily do it. She would yell at me for MONTHS about this and drag me on and on until high school, because she verbally abuses me as well as my dad and they yell at me, I know they care but it's hard to believe it when, you know, they're cursing you out. Should I do it? :/ I'm going to see New Moon tomorrow and buy some new boots with my mom (no doubt she's going to spend 15/16 of the time looking at HER clothes and HER boots) and I don't want her to cancel, I live in Colorado which is cold and I need some boots, all of my shoes (I only have a pair of flip flops I'm STILL wearing, they're cheap ones) are not suited for winter weather. So should I forge it?
Ok, what I can say about this "...no doubt she's going to spend 15/16 of the time looking at HER clothes and HER boots..." See? You're fine in math, you certainly have fractions down! Okay, kidding aside... I wouldn't forge the signature. Instead, tomorrow when you are out with your mom, pick a time when she's feeling relaxed and happy with you (like after watching the movie, perhaps over a snack before going shoe shopping)... Explain to her that you've been struggling a little in one class, and that you have a plan to bring up your grade average. You'll be in public, so the chances of her freaking out on you go down, and you'll hopefully be able to have a calm, civil discussion. Act like an adult, and she'll eventually start to treat you as one. Tell her you have a problem, and a plan to fix it. You might get extra points for telling her BEFORE she buys you shoes (so it doesn't look like you planned on getting what you wanted before telling her what she needed to know). Is she going to let you wear flip-flops all winter over a B? If she did, you'd probably wind up in foster care. Parents are hard on their kids academically because they want them to succeed and have a better life than they had. If you can show your mom with your behavior that she has raised a child who can address and fix a problem before it gets out of control, and without resorting to deceit (forging the sig) - it might go a ways towards calming her down. It's all about presentation. Don't toss the paper down with a deep sigh and mumble, "you gotta sign this.." First tell her why you are getting a B, then how you're going to get an A instead. Have a plan, share it with her, and stick to it. When you turn that B into an A, you've earned yourself some good will in her eyes the next time something like this comes up: if you act responsibly this time, she'll be more likely to believe you'll do the same next time, and trust you more, and (hopefully) yell at you less. Good luck! ///EDIT: In Response to what Sean Roberts wrote\\\ "I see the pressure their parents put on them. Asian students usually excel in school compared to caucasian students as a result of this pressure. I'm caucasian by the way, and I was born in the U. S. You will probably grow up to be a doctor, an engineer, or a scientist." This is incredibly stereotypical. Do Asian parents pressure their kids to do well in school? Absolutely. However, so do African American parents, Caucasian parents, Mexican Parents.... ALL PARENTS for the most part, want their children to excel, thus they pressure them to study hard and do well in school. This is in no way a uniquly Asian experience, and I think what you wrote made it sound as if it were. What I have the most issue with is this sentence: "You will probably grow up to be a doctor, an engineer, or a scientist." Um... what? Seriously? You're that myopic and sterotypical that you assume that an Asian student will grow up to become something elite and important? What if they want to go to design school, or join the military? And what makes an Asian student any more likely to become a doctor/engineer/or scientist than any other student? It's a case of reverse-racism, IMO. Asian's are no smarter because of their nationality... and other races aren't "less intelligent" because they don't happen to be Asian. I found most of your post to be extremely stereotypical and racially biased. And, quite frankly, offensive. This part, however, I do agree with: "I understand that there is a huge amount of pressure on you now. However, it is because your mom really cares about you. I strongly advise against forging her signature. She will find out when she goes to a parent teacher meeting, She will also find out when she calls the school to find out why you didn't get your report card. You'll lose her trust for years to come." That's practical advice for ANY student.
